The Ulster Youth Orchestra is very pleased to announce the appointment of David Smyth Q.C. as new chair of the Board of Directors. He succeeds Lady Trimble who, after ten successful years as chair, announced in May her decision to step down from the position.
David Smyth has been a director on the Ulster Youth Orchestra Board since October 2015.
David’s career at the Bar spanned 23 years, on the Bench from 1972 to 1990. He retired in 2013 as County Court Judge for North Down following previous assignments to Counties Fermanagh and Tyrone and then to County Antrim. David currently works as a meditator and arbitrator.
Aged 68, David is married to Anthea Smyth DL, who breeds National Hunt horses in County Down. They have three children and two grandchildren and his personal interests include music and cycling.
Other charitable interests include President of Addiction NI, Chairman of Northern Ireland Winston Churchill Fellows Trust, and Trustee of North Belfast Working Mens Trust. He represented Northern Ireland for 19 years on the Franco-British-Irish Judicial Committee.
Commenting on his appointment, David Smyth said:
“I look forward to my time as Chair of the Ulster Youth Orchestra. Lady Trimble has led it wonderfully for the past ten years and leaves the Orchestra in a strong position as it enters its 25th Anniversary in 2018. For Northern Ireland to possess such an able, highly commended youth orchestra reflects our local players’ talent, their enthusiasm and the commitment of parents, sponsors, Ulster’s schools and the Music Service of the Education Authority.”
Daphne Trimble commented:
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my ten years at the helm of the UYO. Despite ever present funding challenges we continue to fulfil a vital role as Northern Ireland’s national youth orchestra, providing access to excellence to our most talented young players. I am delighted to hand over the organisation in good heart to David, and he will have my complete support as I continue as a member of the board.”
Ciaran Scullion, Head of Music, Arts Council of Northern Ireland added:
“The Arts Council is delighted at the appointment of David Smyth as the new Chair of the Ulster Youth Orchestra. David brings both an incredible passion for the arts and immense talent to the role and we look forward to continuing to work with the Ulster Youth Orchestra under his Chairmanship as they drive forward their vision to enable young musicians throughout the region to achieve their musical potential.”
